Before the first day of class I thought I knew what technology was, but apparently I was a new duck as malikaaaa =) puts it.
Prior to this class the role of my computer in my life was for
- Use of Microsoft word (Excel, Word, Powerpoint, etc) for papers, lab reports, presentations, you name it.
- Check Yorkmail + Hotmail
- Online Shopping to spoil the kiddo’s and sometimes spoil myself (big fan of Groupon, Zulily, etc)
- Checking world news through MSN, AOL, Yahoo, CNN
- and lastly watching videos on youtube
Who doesn’t like a bullet list. These are some of the things that I will never neglect and will continue to cultivate throughout my future career.
- Technology is essential to life as we know it because a variety of sources keeps us informed and uninformed. I speak only the truth, to some of us its like second nature. We use it daily, its part of us.
- Technology is important because now with our new blogs, like mine, melizabethc we can keep others informed, criticize the work of others or speak highly of them too. One good example is Jim Grooms, Edupunk, and Michael Wesch, “Ed Parkour“.
- Technology keeps us interconnected so we are able to share information. For example TEDxNYED, “TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading”
- Technology, it helps us build tools that support our teaching methods. Like our Maker’s Projects, that will be shown in tomorrow fair and broadcasted live. In addition Digital Storytelling, Finding Connections, Collaborative drawings, etc.
I’m glad that this experience was not like AC101, which was a little fun, but not as fun as this class. AC230 has broadened my view and shown me that there are many tools that makes technology unique. The fact is I have never blogged, utilized photoshop, iMovie, and Garageband. Now that the course if over I feel that I have gained a lot of valuable knowledge and information.
Honestly, every single blog that we wrote in response to Prof. Smiths blogs were enlightening. I never expected to learn so much from this course.
I will continue to blog for the rest of the summer and hopefully the fall ( 🙁 sometimes it gets too hectic for me) nevertheless I will try to blog at least once a week. Seems like this is not the end of my blogging days.
Thank you fellow classmates, Prof. Smith and AC230.
Best wishes to you all.

Digital Storytelling is a wonderful way to get students engaged in the classroom and to allow them to make something in a non-traditional way. Technology is all around us and it will become more vital in the classroom as time passes by.
My idea for a digital story telling project (k-6) would be to ask my students to write down how they would like to see themselves and perhaps their favorite places or things and what they would like to be when they grow up. They can bring a current picture of themselves and we will scan it, save it and use it to digitally enhance it..=)
This picture that I edited is how I saw myself and envisioned myself while I was doing this.I was envisioning myself in colder weather lol, hint, the snow falling. I also like black and white pictures more than I do color, because I guess I value old things, like items, and this looks like something than could be old. I also like the fact that It’s not clear, which is what I intended for it to look like because it shows a bit of mysteriousness which is how I see myself sometimes when I’m super quiet and focused.
Although it doesn’t seem like much, in the end the little details go along way when analyzed. Which is what I would like my students to realize, that the little things that are done and the effort put into things, creates a bigger picture. =)

Upon looking at the results of my poll, I was excited to see the feedback that I received. There are many good ideas and interesting points that some bloggers made=) I got mix results on answers to the questions and there are some points and views that were made that have stuck to me. Here’s a few: “You have to know your community and find a way to attract whether it is through dance, learning a language or something of that sort. Libraries have to get out and get involved, market what they are offering and offer things to attract the people around them”. I totally agree with this. I personally don’t remember the last time that I saw a flyer or something posted anywhere about libraries in my neighborhood. Sadly the youth of today mostly ignores places like a library, it is not the “cool place” to hang out at. But if there are much more activities and programs available at all local libraries, then parents could take their children even before they begin reading themselves so that way they can hopefully continue to do so as they grow up. Another good comment that someone made was that “the library needs to find ways to enter the community more than look for the community to come to them”. Another blogger made an interesting and true point “that not all locations offer such programs”. Also, he/she travels about a mile and a half to visit the Brooklyn central library. I love the fact that someone can still travel that far to visit a library. Awesome! But at the same time, there should be a library that offers many things that the Brooklyn central library offers closer to that persons home.
I do feel that there are libraries that offer many activities and that perhaps they are not putting it out there, however, we need to try to get involved and get out there especially for those of us that have children and for all of us that will be future educators. Perhaps a good idea (that just came to me) is for educators and schools in general to have more trips to libraries. Also to find out more information on activities available in libraries in order to inform students and parents about it=)
The results of my survey in the blog were interesting and most of all it’s great to see once again what others have to say. It turns on a light bulb and makes me want to blog more!
So, I watched my video #15 from the Ignite Talks from the 2012 Digital Media and Learning Conference. The video that I watched was on a talk from Heather Braum. I did a little research on her to find out who she is, her interests and what she does for a living and came across her web page. She is a technology librarian at the Northeast Kansas Library System and states that she received her MLS at Emporia State University and says that she is a third generation librarian. The video is below and I will now touch on a few points that I found interesting for different reasons. I am going to provide the exact time points (hopefully) of the exacts moments that I would like you all to listen to.
There are a few quotes that I found interesting; the first quote being “Libraries are much much more than books and are now the communities hubs”. The second quote is “Through the library sutter for lifelong learning, library patrons experience computer, ebay, art, crafting, gardening and baking classes as well as, knitting, scrabble, cooking and book clubs”. The last quote is “Throughout our lives we seek knowledge and information. Throughout our lives we learn. Throughout our lives we turn to our libraries to continue learning. How is your local library doing this”?

searching for various educational blogs which will give me ideas in helping me become a better teacher i came across a blog which i thought was interesting. i came across
More Focus on Psychological Impact of Digital Media?
by Ian Quillen which it debated whether or not the incorporation of technology helps or hinders children ‘s learning process. An examined study of technology usage with young children shows obsession through the course of the years and learning process. Another experience from Paul Barnwell suggest that educational technology has overstimulated and distracted students. As a prospective teacher I would incorporate the technology in moderation in the classroom setting that way i wouldn’t always be dependent on it and i can give students a mental break from consuming their minds with the technology.
The focus as a teacher is to draw that distinction between using the technology to teach and for cognitive learning and adverse over consumption with the use of the technology.a blogger by the name of wilfredomorell suggest as a techer it is not the technology itself which affect students mental health but the content which leads to the adverse affect which is the video games and other noneducational endeavors associated with the technology. As a teacher it is up to me to monitor the content which takes place within my class so that is something i have to be mindful of what technology students are using .
I was interested in this piece because it critically examined technology and how it incorporated into education. It gave insight on what lead to adverse affects in students learning and cognitive function in over consumption, overstimulation and the negatives of overexposure to video games. This will help me with getting my connection with peers because based on those experience i can give feedback to whether their experiences are the same as mine and what improvements can be made if those experiences encountered can be improved.
Watching the video by Michael Welsh, gives the harsh reality of how students feel about sitting through a traditional lecture in college. Most professors tend to get up there and talk for 2-3 hours straight without any breaks. They expect most students to copy what their saying word for word, or others read directly from the textbook.
Returning back to school after a 8 year break, I was expecting that the style of teaching would have evolved since then but to no avail its pretty much the same. In the article, “The Evolution of American Higher Education”, by James M. Danko, the author also discusses the need for change with the way colleges and universities are teaching students. Students of today are more creative and inventive and colleges would need to be the same in order to attract students that are already worried about their investment in their eduaction due to the struggling economy.

We need to find ways to reach students in a way they understand! We need to understand what they are in tune with!
The video that I watched was extremely interesting with some facts and statistics that I have not thought about before. College means different things for every individual. Some people find it interesting, some attend because family members want them to, others because they really want to, others feel college is boring; college should never be boring. Unfortunately, sometimes it is. Sometimes it can be boring because the way the information is being delivered is boring. Students’ attention has to be captured in a way that resembles the world we live in; technology resembles the world we live in.
College needs to prepare us for the jobs that we will one day fulfull, not what is currenty available. What is curently available might not be once we graduate. Therefore, our education needs to modified in a way that fits the world we have grown up with, and a world we will see 5-10 years down the road. Education needs to evolve as our technological world is advancing. So far in my experience as an undergraduate, I wish I would have had, and would have more hands-on experiences relating to what I will be doing in the near future. I am a Bilingual Childhood education major and I wish we would have certain things at York College that we will see in our future jobs. For example, many public schools across the city have Smart Boards and Elmos. We should have an interactive classroom that has things that we will see in the schools. Same goes for any other major. College should be a real experience for what awaits us! What awaits us is being able to use technology to maneuver around this busy world of ours!
Why should we have to look things up at home? Lets do things together; in the classroom!
