A New Awakening

Truly I can’t  find the words to describe my new found excitement for technology and how it can be used in the classroom.  I feel a sense of liberation and freedom because all this time I was trying to figure out how to make my future classroom more exciting and innovative without technology because I am not that experinced and bright when it comes to new media, but that has all changed.   Instead of avoiding the constantly evolving technology in my classroom I have chosen to embrace it.  I have chosen to get a hold of this Bag of Gold as Gardner Campbell mentioned.  This class has truly taught me a lesson that ignorance is a bliss, because I was one of those who agreed to an extent with teachers who were complaiig about learning new media to enhance their teaching and students.  After taking this class I will tell them that if they do not include these new medias in their classroom they are starving their students and are becoming a hipocrite because we are educators its our job to learn but yet we are refusing to learn and keeping the title as educator, dont that sound strange.  Well to me it does and I am glad I took this class especially with the professor I have. He was down to earth and he did not spoon feed us every  single detail but he made us learn it on our own to make sure it leaves an impression and lasts.  I love the way that this course gave me an excitement to become an educator.  I also love how this class created oppurtunities for creativity and new experiences.  I will definitley cherish, value and use mostly everything I learned in this class, especially the new Blog I created. I can only say Future class look forward to a new exciting and ground breaking experience in your education, thanks to all and I know this is not the end to my new passion for learning and experiencing new media, Thanks Professor, Whoo!! 🙂

My final thoughts on AC230 and blogging

Here is my Blog.

This is how I thought I would end up feeling before I ever started AC230, by just knowing it was “some computer class like 4 hours long in the summer”:

This is how I feel now, to say (express) the least:

Before I started the class, I really thought that it was going to be some boring computer class that would either try to teach me things that I already knew, or things that I would never use again.  I was totally wrong. I will really say that the things I have learned in this class has actually had more of an impression on me than many other classes I have had (yes a bit sad in a way, I know).  This is the first time I have actually blogged and used any type of photo editing, photoshop, youtube video making programs.  I wasn’t even thinking I would use any of that any time soon and less in this class.  Again, I was wrong; but it’s good to be wrong sometimes.  I love the way Professor Smith went about creating ideas for our posts and providing some info/guidelines for us to do so.  There were a couple of times where I did’t know how to use a certain program, but I had fun playing with it and worked my way around things and got it done! What was even more neat, was that I was kind of waiting eagerly to see what the next post woule be about.  I also enjoyed commenting on everyones posts and seeing how much feedback I was getting on mines.  I was checking my email more than the 3 or 4x’s daily I was already used to doing.  It’s great to be able to have a network of people that can share similar interersts, or even of they don’t, they can contribute new ideas and give feedback on something that you’re working on.  I can go on forever about how much I have really enjoyed this class and doing all the things we have done…

I have gotten a lot more than expected from this class.  I have realized by taking this class, that there is a lot more than just going out there in the classrooms and just talking, talking, talking. There’s endless things that one can do and teachers can learn as they go along.  Learning is a process for everyone, it’s endless, a continuous circle that widens as one continues to transform his/herself.  Transformation, adjustments, contributions and change are things that will help one help others. One can never be “Comfortable” once you become “comfortable” as an educator, then the rest is history.

Thanks to professor Smith, my fellow classmates and all the feedback, ideas, and comments, I am now more “comfortable” with knowing that I will need to be “uncomfortable” as a future teacher and in order to reach all the goals I have set up to reach=)

Edumaaaa punkedddd :O

I watched a video entitled, “A vision of students today” and I was so saddened to see what was going on in the video.  A quote that stood out to me that was probably written on the wall by a bored college student:

“if these walls could talk, what would they say?”

Imagine, that’s how tortured and bored college students are in class and how they suffer alongside not learning and learning in a way thats different and approachable to them.

This video really stood out to me in so many ways. I was hooked from started to finish and this video speaks the truth about those in debt after graduation, those are not 100 percent certain if they will have a job in the future, those students who are there with their laptop in class but don’t even pay attention because they are on Facebook majority of the time.

The video showed me the boredom these college students endure. Most of them are there and payed for their course but they are not really fully PRESENT there. They sit there probably because they are told that college is a great thing and that if you don’t have ab Bachelor of Arts degree after approxiamately four years you are nothing. That is not how we should be taught and our mindset in society is so different nowadays that it is totally different.

I personally feel that this video has enlightened me and proved to me that we are all feeling the same yet different about college and our degrees and our future endeavors in life. I hope one day our mindset changes and we are not left hostage as prisoners in our society. I hope that one day debt wouldn’t exist and that education could be afforable for every single person. I hope for many things but it would take more than an army to get to where I feel society should be.

So what now?

TECHNOLOGY, TECHNOLOGY, TECHNOLOGY!!!! That’s what I feel would really help society and I think that others would agree with me on this one. Technology helps people come together and also sets them apart. However, it really is something that I can personally say helped me to learn a lot about the world and how to use different programs that I have never used in my life like Sound Cloud and even Youtube and Flickr. These programs have really opened my mind to something brand new and showed me that as a future educator, I can incorporate the use of technology heavily into my teaching so not only can I make it fun but I can feel that the students would want to use it and enjoy it because, I was once an elementary student and now I’m on the road to becoming something which is my life-long dream and I don’t want to mess it up. I want my teaching as a teacher to be fun and joyful and I feel that by incorporating 100 percent personality, a dash of sarcasm and playfulness and a load of technology, the recipe for future success will be fantastic.

This is the video that got my head spinning and thinking so many things. It’s so addictivee. You will keep watching because, its the honest truth and many can relate to things that have happened. I’m glad that there is a video that enlightens everyone and talks about taboos that many are afraid to discuss.

One day I hope college students are happy and genuinely they are happy and they look something like this:

Get Up and Get to Work!!

I honestly believe that in order to make a difference you have to be willing to step out of your comfort zone.  You have to constantly remind yourself of your goal and reason for being in the place you are, which in our case are  classrooms.  I beleive that most educators have become content and has hung their hats with what works because they never had a goal or vision or they stopped believing.  My fingers are not enough to count the amount of teachers that I  have seen and come in contact with that are passionless and uninspired, they are there to do their “job” get paid and move on.  Their is no zeal and no expectation to move beyond what they are currently doing.  The video that revealed students Vision of College today is not just happening in college but in every area of education.  We as educators need to stop compromising and start giving our best.  The students deserve the best, not some washed up lesson plan that has been used for 20 years as professor stated, we need to remember why we are educators.  We are supposed to create new experiences that will challenge and stimulate the minds of others.  To be called an educator you need to also educate yourself, this is part of our responsibility as an educator.  It is time to get uncomfortable and creative.  Let’s move forward and make a difference.

I had a bit of difficulty understanding what she was saying at first. To be completely honest, I had to re-watch this video twice to really get a grasp of what she was saying. However, Mel Chua is a very interesting and quite unique individual.  To me, she stands out from the rest because what she discuesses in her video is a little different than a lot of things.

A little about Mel Chua:

Mel Chua is a contagiously enthusiastic hacker, writer, and educator with over a decade of teaching and curriculum development experience and a solid track record in leadership positions at Red Hat, One Laptop Per Child, Sugar Labs, Fedora, and other Free, Libre, and Open Source Software (FLOSS) communities. Currently based at Purdue University, she bridges academic research on successful communities with deep personal experience getting her hands dirty building them.  She loves loves loves hacking into  things especially hardware as well as software. She also considers herself a major geek. She also enjoys learning about learning and teaching herself new hacker qualities,etc./ Her teaching style is geeky mixed with wacky which is so unique in today’s society. I thought that she was pretty cool.

ERobot (Building Bot for Essays ( Maker video)

Hey, this is a video of what I plan to make to help benefit my future students as a future educator.  What I originally intended to be hand made instruments turned out to be a Robot like diagram that will help students understand the structure and significance of an essay.  Many students do not understand the importance of the order in an essay but presented in a body like manner, I believe will drive it home and make it more clearer.  Here’s a video of me starting my process on the ERobot its not yet done but it is in the making. I do apologize for the angle, hope you did not break your neck trying to watch this video 🙂

#TeamMakers – Decisions, Decisions …. Rocket vs. Heater

For the Makers project me and Rey teamed up and went through many different ideas as to what we can make that also be an assignment we can teach to our future students. We didn’t to just build anything we wanted our “Maker” or “Tool” to serve a purpose.  The first idea we came up with was to make “High-Pressure Foam Rockets” as were seen on the Make Project website, we felt that it was fun, creative and fundamental for our future classrooms but it wasn’t challenging enough. So we stumbled across the “Altoids -Tin Heater”, and we thought it was perfect, challenging, creative. The project even though it seems rather easy it was a bit of a challenge especially when it came to cutting and punching holes through the sheet metal.

The objective of this tool is to teach our future students how to build a portable heater for survival kit purposes possibly to use when camping and needing to roast marshmallows or to simply boil water as suggested on the web-page. Stay tuned for our final finished product!

This is the link to Reyawesome’s post of our 2nd attempt of building our Heater.
