I was inspired by Prof. Smith to share a few cell samples from a previous biology course I took, hope you enjoy. I think they are real pieces of art work.

Mammal Adipose Tissue [400x]

Cell containing lipids (fat cells) in this figure have been stained with Sudan III dye. As we can observe adipose tissues indicate how lipids accumulate in cells.  In red is droplet containing lipid.

Potato Tuber Starch Grains [1000x oil ]

Plant tissue stores starch (polysaccharides) within the cytoplasm in the forms of granules. These cells have been stained with Periodic acid-Schiff stain this results in pink/purple stained starch. We observed some cells contain more than a few granules. Cell membrane is stained green.

Mammal colon goblet cells, mucous sec mc & h [100x]

The lining cells of the nose and other mucus secreting locations have compounds called mucopolysaccharide, which are glycoproteins. Mucopolysacharides in this figure are observed by the color red because it has been stained with Periodic acid-Schiff.

My maker plan revised: The shoebox of union and education

I have given some thought to my original maker plan and decided that it didn’t suit my real interests and probably those of my future students; so I came up with something much better and I think this is it! To begin with, I’m a bilingual childhood education major (Spanish). So, I’ve been to many classrooms where sometimes kids can be a little mean to each other when another child/student doesn’t know English well or even vice versa.  So in order to try and have the children appreciate other languages other than their native one and to also have a little fun learning and practicing while they are doing it, I (my husband helped me so I will credit him too) came up with the shoebox and story booklet project/ activity.  I will create a nice colorful shoebox which will be filled with little papers.  These little papers will have a phrase or word written on it. Each paper will have it written in both languages (Spanish and English), so that the native English speaker will learn Spanish, and the Native Spanish speaker will be learning and practicing English. :). I will go around with the box, they will pick a paper and read it out loud. They will be provided with little hand made booklets or they can make it themselves, so after they pick the word and read it thea can write it in both languages in their little booklets.  This will be a weekly activity, if not every other day, so they can fill up their little booklets and at the end of the year they can make a story book with all the words that they have in their booklet.  :). One more thing, I do realize that as a public school teacher the classroom is very diverse at times, so if there are students that speak a language other than English or Spanish, I will ask for them to contribute a word from their language:)

This activity will hopefully help each student interact, learn and appreciate other languages in order to lessen the barriers that are sometimes encountered in bilingual classrooms.  I will post a video later on today:)

Feedback responses from Mel Chua

So I asked the class two important questions about Mel’s video and also response, etc.

So the replies all came together to say the following:

1) How do you feel about hacking?

– Majority of answers include that hacking is different and something that is not known to most students but educators. Results show that hacking is a 50/50 in opinion. Some like the idea, others don’t.

2) Do you feel that hacking could benefit today’s society?

For this question, I made it multiple choice to hear full and honest opinion. It stated that people said no and yes. 3 votes for yes and 2 for no.

My ignite talk blog responses

My blog response comments is from Ignite talk with Heather Mallak.

Heather Mallak discussed many thing from instincts, ingenuity technology as a tool, trends and how these subjects intersect.

I proposed two questions from her speech which i felt was important and stuck our in my mind which was the main ingredient to Heather’s speech. The Feedback on these two questions from Students in my AC 230 class was exactly the answers i was looking for when i proposed the questions. The first question was how could using your teeth be used as a tool? The second questions was why do you think Heather feels our bodies is the key to ingenuity which applies ideas to meet challenges?

Feedback from first question(how could using your teeth be used as a tool?)

basically in similar answers students responded with before we had tools such as scissors , our teeth was used to cut and to tear into things like food plastic so us as humans had to use or teeth as tools.

Feedback from 2nd question( why do you feel our bodies is the key to ingenuity which applies ideas to meet challenges?)

the general answer from students is that anything we create comes from our hands , our minds to formulate the concepts. and basically our whole body goes through the creative process in order to manifest the idea into reality .

These responses in general is what i was looking for from my questions because it was the main point in Heather’s speech in order to connect how we can connect technology as an extension of our body with education and keeping up with the times/trends.

Igniting Conversation About the Future of Education – Henry Jenkins (video 13)

My video was about Henry Jenkins who is “officially” the Provost’s Professor of Communication, Journalism, and Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California. He likes to refer to himself as a Professor of Miscellaneous Studies.

His work focuses on the roles in which media plays in the daily lives of people.  What he highlights in this video clip, representative of some of his work, is the notion of “participatory culture”.  He has written books like Textual Poachers: Television Fans and Participatory Culture; Convergence Culture: Where Old and New Media Collide; and the forthcoming Spreadable Media: Creating Value and Meaning in a Networked Culture (with Sam Ford and Joshua Green), and runs conferences such as Transmedia Hollywood and Futures of Entertainment.

“The culture in Rio was a place that was informal, chaotic yet deeply social” – This as linked to education, which can be so formal and possibly rigid at times, seems to embrace chaos as a positive force in socializing and communication.  Additionally, he discusses what he says are “lecture police for not participating”, all of which serve as “a model for education”.

slide guy on alien egg sack

here’s my first photoshop picture, from the ds106 assignment blog. i used adobe photoshop and watched a video tutorial on how to do it. it was a simple task once you view someone else do it. i decided to put slide guy on the alien queen’s egg sack thingy from the film Aliens because it’s funny looking and gross! and one of those scenes that grossed me out when i was a kid.

Dance With Me

I can honestly say that i have underestimated this video assignment on DS106 but i am proud to say that i enjoyed it. I finally learned how to  make videos and how to use Movie maker to do it.  This will not be the last time I will do something like this.  This is definitely a good skill to learn. Hope you can enjoy it i tried my best. I named this Montage Dance.

By the way i contested this video and it was permitted

This is the new Montage that i have posted and it is emphasized on dance, this assignment allowed me to tell a story through video and this is a great tool for the classroom because it is a way to connect with this current generation. This tool will allow students to be engaged and motivated in learning.  Students will be excited to enhance their academics not only because its something they can relate with but also because its fun.  The first video is the one that was taken down and the second one was able to go through, if you want to comment on the difference feel free to compare and contrast
