The final cut

Final Cut of our maker project

Through many trails, our maker project just kept getting better and better. The different versions all unique, working and improved. I had the best time with this maker project because although it was at first difficult, I really feel that our team mastered it. Not only that but the maker project has inspired me to go on with maker culture. I have embraced this path of spontaneity and exploration so much that I’m working on quite a few things after this course. I’ve actually started a new blog of my own using wordpress and I am pleased to say that I am a maker and that I will be working on my hovercraft project still also my amplifier.

For the maker faire, I will be providing the class with metal sheet, tea lights, and matches, but if you wish to make yourself a portable heater, you totally need to bring an altoids container or any metal container of your own!

It is encouraged you go home with one of these awesome gadgets, you can utilize them practically anywhere!

Experiments with the heater wonder

Created another portable heater but also imporved a lot of it. These are just small experiments before the final cut with EIrby that will be posted tonight!

The process in making this is now becoming a load simpler because we are mastering it slowly. We readjusted more things, bought a better hole puncher, thought to make the heating space larger and went green for cut numero dos.

The video will show you how we experimented with our new and improved portable heater: Made by EIrby & ReyAwesome

Blogging Culture

This is the link to my blog.

Initially…

I thought that I was going to suffer from boredom because AC230 is a 4 hour class. How long can one stay online? I really didn’t think I’d last. But after the first day I felt I could do this again…

Afterwards…

I didn’t mind learning how to blog, I liked it better when we kept playing around with blogging and blogging tools. I learned much from the course because now I can photoshop better, I learned how to throw in audio, make montages, create my very own webpage, hyperlink, download images and files. I learned so much in the class, and I’ve already started making videos for my friends and I to view on my youtube account. I feel like this course was educational and so very interesting because I got to be a maker. There are very few opportunities in my classes to make anything as cool as my portable heater. Heck, I’m going to build it again, and again and possibly share it amongst my hiker pals since we do a lot of camping out. This was a course I’d like to see other students take because it honestly allowed for exploration, mistakes and growth.

One thing I enjoyed most about blogging is that it always had guidelines. The professor was able to guide us though let us create and express our thoughts and ideas how we wanted to. I have a new appriciation for the blogging culture because of this, and I have more of an appriciation because I had a voice.

Infinity plus TED

The responses my blog recieved were interesting rather they displayed much desire for Mr. Schmidt’s TED talk. Commenters have said that he seemed intelligent and that they can agree with his views as well.
For question #1, “Do you think lecturing is effective?” Polls came by stating that lecturing isn’t always 100% effective. It was said by one commenter that lecturing doesnt create spaces for feedback, and I agree.
For question #2, commenters stated for the question, “Do you think it is important for students to relate to the context of what they’re learning?” Feedback reads, that Yes, it is important to establish a connection between students and context. Direct quote from a replier, “it is important for students to be able to relate to the material learned because it gives them a better understand of what is being learned and connects the material to themselves and reality.”
ASKED QUESTIONS:
  • Do you think lecturing is effective?
  • Do you think it is important for students to relate to the context of what they’re learning ?
REPLIES:
  1. I like him…he has a slight accent but he is very intelligent and the things that he proposes and the solutions about challenges are pretty cool. He is concerned about creating something personal and sharing it with other people. I like the way that he thinks. It is pretty cool.

  2. I dont believe lectures are 100 percent effective because most of them are just speakers who leave no room for feedback. i believe lectures can be effective if they allow for the audience to ask questions pertaining to the information presented but in most cases lectures dont allot for this type of interaction due to the magnitude of audience present. it would be impossible to answer everyone’s question but to answer the question it is not generally effective but it can be if some room for feedback is alloted

i think it is important for students to relate to the context of what they’re learning because they should be able to implement their acquired knowledge in practical terms. the good old saying practice what you preach…. you can know about something and recite many different variables concerning a particular subject but you should be able to practice this is everyday life to where it is useful to you in the physical form. It is a matter of doing and not just saying and knowing because that is only half of the equation. it is important for students to be able to relate to the material learned because it gives them a better understand of what is being learned and connects the material to themselves and reality.

  3. I like the quotes. Especially the first one. I think teachers like to beat students over the head with the same concepts even if it does not work. Looking forward to your questions. I’m following the instructions and not having any luck getting my questions up -_-

We’re living in a conversation, and its moving fast

Converstaion: Edupunk

Edupunk a term coined by Jim Groom, is described as an approach to teaching and learning practices that result from a do it yourself attitude. The Do it yourself movement is just a re-introduction of old methods. Methods that involved personal involvement and skills, like the upkeep of houses, stitching clothes; maintaining equipment and every other aspect of living. This is very important considering education today, we learn in terms of abstractions rather then fundamentals of life like cooking, building, sewing. What the DIY learning and teaching methods all about is rebuilding that lost entity of our lives. Edupunks based on self-directed learning by which means you learn it yourself. Also known as autodidact. Learning by doing is a method which is contemplative, absorptive.

According to a blog by Nick Desantis, blogging about Jim Grooms edupunk, “These days he avoids the word because he fears people were preoccupied with the label rather than its goals. He uses a new creative outlet instead.” I really believe that the two images Professor Smith posted resembles Grooms transformed perspective. I feel that when edupunk all started it really was about just getting it out there, so he went all out and it was once about him as a part of his movement but now he entirely is for its meaning. In Grooms disengagement with edupunk he wrote his famous Dear Edupunk blog, stating his divorce of the label, which really says it all.

In modern class environments more traditionally controlled venues take place where commercial tools like PowerPoint, even Blackboard are used. These supposedly open learning tools are really based by closed Learning Management Systems. The edupunk movement is an educational reformation where individuals can be the carriers of their own knowledge.

Who says knowledge has to be based on solely theories and formulas? But it can be simply replacing your RAM or hard drive. Knowledge is the key to success. Knowledge is knowing how to fix your tire when your stranded, that’s the key.

A new start with an infinite TED talker

Phillip Schmidt

Quoting: Phillip Schmidt in The Digital Media and Learning Conference

  1. For a long time now we know that lectures are a really bad way of helping people learn, but we continue to do that anyway.
  2. What if we look at a different starting point, re imagine what online learning will look like.
  3. Online challenges are problem based learning online, big problems that are relevant to people’s lives…

In the first quote he says that we all know that lectures alone are a bad way to help people learn, but we do it anyway. I think that he’s right and that’s something that should change. I really enjoyed Phillip Schmidt TED talk because he managed to engage the audience and even though it was a TED talk he got the audience to participate in his layout.

I like that Phillip asked, what if we looked at a different starting point. I didn’t think of it before, but he was right we should look at educational resources with new eyes and see what could really happen.

Finally, his last quote which involved explaining what online challenges were but rather having it relate to his audience. In order to learn, there should be some sort of problem that powers your brain and it should definitely be something that you could relate to, it gives it meaning to the context and the context will live on.

We are the Makers! ::sings::

Finally! Evelyn and I finally made our portable heater! The steps were to be recreated, but we feel it may have been a one time thing because the recreation of our first project was actually a miracle.

Materials:

  • Metal sheet paper
  • Tea light
  • scissors
  • Lighter/matches
  • Tin box
  • Hole puncher
  • Imagination

Step one: Plan a layout

Step two: Measure tin box and cut out a piece of sheet that would fit into the box

Step three: Try very very hard to punch holes for fire to go through

Step four: Create a stand for the tea light to create stability

Step five: create a barrier so that the matches and tea light are sparated

Last but not least, test it out, be sure the box can shut tightly for portibility!

Bumper Sticker Linker

Google Drawing– Slapped on images I felt could contribute to our Bumper sticker project.

The course is a fun, educational. Learning about all the things the web offers is very interesting. I like that we link a lot of education into all of our projects and I enjoy that we can network through the internet and it can later become very useful. I think that the course expanded my knowledge of computers and applications. This course can be helpful because students can use other forms of contacting, networking, learning, teaching and presenting. I’m glad I took this course, its well worth it!
