This is a little how I felt when I began looking for a blogger that I could relate to on educational views and find interesting enough to write about on this post. Then I came across Jabiz Raisdana’s Intrepid Teacher blog page; now this blogger for me was interesting. I came across him on Professor Michael Smith’s Twitter page and Jabiz happened to be one of his followers.
Now I feel like: I’m on the right path!
From what I read on Jabiz’s blog so far, I’ve got to see his insight on education and how he states that educational systems can be modified and developed to be a mixture of “fun and play” not just all seriousness. He states, “I hope I have been clear that I understand the value of both, but I think schools spend more time preparing students for a reality of exams and bureaucracy and work and taxes and things we dread, than inspiring in them a love of life and learning and creativity and art and fun”.
It feels great that I was able to find a blogger that can relate to my views in some way! I think this is the beginning of my professional social networking development! Cool!
I want to be able to teach students that learning is fun, form a special connection with them and show them they can do anything possible in the present day, not that we as educators are JUST preparing them for what is to come. Yes that’s a big part of educating but it needs to be done with creativity and in a way that will last!

The video that I watched was extremely interesting with some facts and statistics that I have not thought about before. College means different things for every individual. Some people find it interesting, some attend because family members want them to, others because they really want to, others feel college is boring; college should never be boring. Unfortunately, sometimes it is. Sometimes it can be boring because the way the information is being delivered is boring. Students’ attention has to be captured in a way that resembles the world we live in; technology resembles the world we live in.
College needs to prepare us for the jobs that we will one day fulfull, not what is currenty available. What is curently available might not be once we graduate. Therefore, our education needs to modified in a way that fits the world we have grown up with, and a world we will see 5-10 years down the road. Education needs to evolve as our technological world is advancing. So far in my experience as an undergraduate, I wish I would have had, and would have more hands-on experiences relating to what I will be doing in the near future. I am a Bilingual Childhood education major and I wish we would have certain things at York College that we will see in our future jobs. For example, many public schools across the city have Smart Boards and Elmos. We should have an interactive classroom that has things that we will see in the schools. Same goes for any other major. College should be a real experience for what awaits us! What awaits us is being able to use technology to maneuver around this busy world of ours!

The proposed budget cuts by mayor Bloomberg to after-school programs across NYC is one that will become an educational and economical crisis to say the least. More than 56,000 children will be left without a spot in an educationally enriched after-school program that they were once a part of. Many low and middle income working parents rely on these after-school programs, and will have to quit their job in order to take care of their children. How can this be any good for future of the children and the economy of the city? In the article “Curtailing a Service That Parents Depend On”, it is stated that from 454 educational after-program sites currently open, that will be reduced to 261 sites across the city. Now really, how is that benefiting the city? Perhaps I will be quite critical of the proposed ideas (usually I don’t pay much attention to politics and the economy but as a future educator and parent, I feel this is totally wrong), but for politicians and society constantly saying that the economy is in a downward spiral, well, this certainly adds to to that downward spiral. Think about it for a minute, tons of children across the City losing access to after-school programs which help them with their homework and keeps them of the dangerous city streets while their parents are at work; will result in parents having to lose their job, then being supported by government assistance, and in the end, they will not be able to contribute as a taxpayer which in turn will lead to other cuts in the budget. Okay, this by now, should sound like a crisis. It most certainly is, however, it may not be as bad as it has been made out to be. Hopefully the proposed cuts are just one of those in which “the city council comes to the rescue by restoring at least some of the money”.
