Teaching Design

Emily Pilloton: Teaching design for change

Emily Pilloton founded Project H Design in Bertie County, North Carolina, one of the poorest and most rural county in the state. Project H Design would develop a design-build curriculum for high-school kids. Project H is a design organization merges the power of design to the people who need it most, and the places where it can make a real and lasting difference. It makes way for creative capital that schools may more then need.

An Interview with Ms. Pilloton:

Interviewer: “Of course none of this would be possible without modern technology—websites and emails—but how do you make everyone feel like they’re a part of this thing happening, together?

Ms. Pilloton: “we’re really big on documentation and telling stories. I think that’s the key to keeping people working towards a collective goal, but being able to do it in their own way. We give them the tools to document and tell stories, but then measure their impact.”

Visiting Professor Smith’s twitter page got me scrolling onto Tim Owens, then onto Jason Floms… but none were capturing my interest so I figured I’d hit TED talks on youtube and I educated myself about this woman Emily Pilloton and I found someone whose beliefs could match my own. I enjoyed her video and what she stands for hopefully you all do to.

  1. Very interesting…I like the way she thinks..why cant we have more people that think like her these days?

  2. Hey Rey Awesome,

This was a great video blog. Emily and her Team “Studio H” have some great ideas for Bertie County. She came in and saw where the system was lacking and falling short of, example being technology in the homes of students. With technology advancements surging technology inside and outside of the homes are necessary in order to connect with what’s going on all around the word. Learning new things doesn’t have to necessarily take place in the classroom, there are so many things on the Internet that is being shared and can be learned. So with that being said Studio H will be helping the community a great deal be providing them with computers and Internet access in their homes. This small community was in desperate need of change.

  3. wow this is really interesting and inspiring, i really enjoyed the video, and i think its great what they are doing. Whats even better is the excitement and passion that is displayed. Those apart of the H design really care about theses people, students who live in Bertie County and are will ing to sacrifice certain things, to reach this goal and make their education system better. One thing that I learned from watching this video is that I will take with me into my career as a future educator is that being an educator involves much sacrifice, you can’t just look and complain about how things are falling apart but like our professor states be a maker with the resources that are available, this was nice and refreshing, good job
