My vision of College: Evolving with the world

We need to find ways to reach students in a way they understand! We need to understand what they are in tune with!

The video that I watched was extremely interesting with some facts and statistics that I have not thought about before.  College means different things for every individual.  Some people find it interesting, some attend because family members want them to, others because they really want to, others feel college is boring; college should never be boring.  Unfortunately, sometimes it is. Sometimes it can be boring because the way the information is being delivered is boring.  Students’ attention has to be captured in a way that resembles the world we live in; technology resembles the world we live in.

College needs to prepare us for the jobs that we will one day fulfull, not what is currenty available.  What is curently available might not be once we graduate.  Therefore, our education needs to modified in a way that fits the world we have grown up with, and a world we will see 5-10 years down the road.  Education needs to evolve as our technological world is advancing.  So far in my experience as an undergraduate, I wish I would have had, and would have more hands-on experiences relating to what I will be doing in the near future.  I am a Bilingual  Childhood education major and I wish we would have certain things at York College that we will see in our future jobs.  For example, many public schools across the city have Smart Boards and Elmos. We should have an interactive classroom that has things that we will see in the schools.  Same goes for any other major.  College should be a real experience for what awaits us! What awaits us is being able to use technology to maneuver around this busy world of ours!

Why should we have to look things up at home? Lets do things together; in the classroom!

Hello to everyone! A little about myself....I am currently majoring in Bilingual Childhood Education and I will be entering my 4th semester once the Fall semester begins. I graduated BMCC in Jan of 2011 with a degree in Liberal Arts... Everyday I try to do my best in everything and maintain a positive mind in order to move forward and fulfill my goals. Although I feel like I've been on the college path for an eternity, I've realized for me, "steady and slow wins the race" :) I love tropical places and I hate pollution! Hope to island and country hop with my family one day:) Good luck to all, in all that you do!

  1. My favorite quote, “College needs to prepare us for the jobs that we will one day fulfill, not what is currently available.” That is a mantra for the future of education. Beware of what it asks of you as a future teacher!

    • @Prof. Smith,

Thanks! That “beware” of yours has been heard loud and clear on this end. lol. Thanks=)

  2. I love the cartoons that you used. It’s really the entire truth as to what college students are really going through in a nutshell. The way this college is definitely doesn’t have as many programs and offer many extra-curricular type of activities in order to really promote education. I really don’t understand why to be honest. I hope this changes in the future because its ridiculous. We are the future teachers of America and I do agree that college should really help us in setting up our future, etc. It is so important that we know that we can find a job after this, even if not right after college.

  3. I agree with prof. smith. I sometimes believe that professors are out of touch of what is going on in the “real world” because they already accomplished their own personal goals. Sometimes I have to wonder whether or not I am being misinformed. Also, I think you make a good point with your first picture. I believe there is a disconnect between students and authority figures, whether it be teachers or parents.

  4. Good Job, I love all the images you used to express your point. My favorite ones are the first and the last one. I totally agree when you stated that we need to reach students in the way they understand. I also agree that college should never be boring and that we should be able to have more hands on experience in the area that we are majoring in. This will definitely help out a lot and get rid of the feeling of inadequacy and fear of failure. Technology is advancing and education needs to stay connected and in touch. Out with the old in with the new.
